Creative tourism is a rapidly growing sub-segment of cultural tourism, based on creative collaboration between tourists and hosts to develop engaging, fulfilling experiences. First defined ten years ago as:
Tourism which offers visitors the opportunity to develop their creative potential through active participation in courses and learning experiences which are characteristic of the holiday destination where they are undertaken (Richards and Raymond, 2000:18),
creative tourism now covers a wide range of private and public programs in different parts of the world. To mark the first decade of creative tourism development, Creative Tourism Barcelona has invited the ATLAS Cultural Tourism Group to organize a special research seminar during the first Conference on Creative Tourism in Barcelona. The conference will be held in Gaudì’s iconic La Pedrera building in the heart of Barcelona, and will bring together creative tourism operators, policy makers and academics to discuss the development and future of creative tourism. Part of the conference will be dedicated to the establishment of an international Creative Tourism Network, which is designed to provide a sustainable forum for knowledge exchange in the sector.
The Research Seminar during the conference will provide experienced researchers and postgraduate research students with the opportunity to present their work in this rapidly developing field. We welcome papers which explore all aspects of creative tourism, including:
• Creative tourism programs
• Creative tourism experiences
• The relationship between cultural and creative tourism
• The public policy context of creative tourism
• Co-creation between tourists and hosts
• Creativity as an engine for tourism development
• The relationship between the creative industries and tourism
You are invited to submit an abstract (maximum 500 words) of your proposed paper, setting out the content of the paper, the relationship to the seminar themes and the theoretical and/or practical relevance of your contribution. Abstracts should be sent to Greg Richards (g.w.richards@uvt.nl) no later than October 1st 2010. Authors will be informed of acceptance by October 8th. Papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication.
