MMK TALKS
Museum Production

Curated by Nikolaus Hirsch

More than a mere instrument of representation, the contemporary art museum today has become a veritable space of production. Under the traditional surface of representation politics lies an enlarged field in which almost every museum activity has been given the potential to become cultural production. Thus, the space that used to serve the sole purpose of exhibiting and displaying collections is increasingly understood as a site of artistic and curatorial production in its own right. Research-based projects, knowledge production, education, and curatorial practice are tending towards becoming exhibition formats and, consequently, they have been put on public display.

The MMK Talks on "Museum Production" aim to reflect and critically assess the typology of the contemporary museum and its production methods ranging from the construction of the physical infrastructure, to distribution, knowledge, art history, and performance.

Wednesday, 21 April 2010, 7pm
Building the Museum
David Adjaye & Tobias Rehberger
moderated by Nikolaus Hirsch

Museum architect David Adjaye and artist Tobias Rehberger negotiate the diverse role models in the physical production of the contemporary museum: Who builds what? Is the traditional distribution of labor still a functioning one, or are architects increasingly making art – and, likewise, artists making architecture?

Thursday, 20 May 2010, 7pm
Knowledge Production
Shuddhabrata Sengupta (Raqs Media Collective) & Tom Holert
moderated by Nikolaus Hirsch

Delhi based Raqs Media Collective and art critic Tom Holert (Berlin/Vienna) discuss the increasing impact of "knowledge production" within art institutions: Do research-based artistic practices effect museum display and exhibitions? How does museal knowledge production relate to academic environments? What is the potential and what are the limits of research conducted in the museum?

Thursday, 17 June 2010, 7pm
Access & Distribution (or: Who Owns the Public Museum?)
Jan Debbaut & Marysia Lewandowska
moderated by Susanne Gaensheimer

The seeming success of the museum as a popular cultural model ultimately questions its underlying modes of accessibility and distribution. Following a screening of Neil Cummings & Marysia Lewandowska's film "Museum Futures: Distributed" curator and museum expert Jan Debbaut and artist Marysia Lewandowska debate the future of the museum as a public institution.

September 2010
The Production of History
Walid Raad
Examining the relation between the wars of the past century in the Middle East and the current implementation of new cultural infrastructures in the UAE and elsewhere in the Arab world, Walid Raad's performance-lecture addresses the museum as a producer of cultural genealogies and art histories.

October 2010
Musée de la Danse
Boris Charmatz & Tino Sehgal
Choreographer Boris Charmatz (Musée de la Danse) and artist Tino Sehgal investigate the contemporary art museum as a site of production beyond the display of objects, photographs, sculptures, installations or videos – instead, the museum's empty rooms are filled by gestures, bodies, narratives, and dances.

November 2010
Producing Production
Hans Ulrich Obrist & Guests
Over the past decade the museum has generated an increasing diversity of formats: Research laboratories, night schools, marathons, flea markets. What will be next? Curator Hans Ulrich Obrist brings together a variety of museum practitioners to speculate on the production of programme and the impact on the future of the museal model.
