‘Pick of the week . . . Emotional, gut-wrenching and deeply personal’ (Sunday Times)
‘The eloquent and searing images are presented with such directness that the tenor of the drawn line is at times overwhelming.’ (Studio International)
'Grisaille' is the technique of making monochrome paintings or drawings to resemble monumental sculpture. Fisher began her series of charcoal drawings, etchings and engravings about ordinary family life over ten years ago. Her family was then beset by crises as her parents declined and died, her husband and daughter suffered serious illnesses, and she confronted her own ageing and her children’s growing independence. Out of this ordeal came several series of narratives powerfully rendered as epic history and mythology. They show the maturing of Fisher's style, the complete mastery of classical figuration and, moreover, offer up art as an act of love.
The private view is on Friday, 16th April 2010, 4-7 p.m. A free symposium of talks by leading scholars around the theme of history-painting, with Beth Fisher in conversation with curator Marius Kwint, will be held beforehand.
Accompanied by a full-colour illustrated catalogue with essays by Nick Bradford, Ludmilla Jordanova, Marius Kwint, Alexander Moffatt RSA and Joanna Soden, and published by the Royal Scottish Academy.
