The works of conceptual painter Päivi Takala and installation artist David Kroell broach the issues of vanishing, decay and absence.



Päivi Takala's most recent series Vanitas refers to the genre tradition of painting and presents a contemporary version of the Vanitas Idea. The reminiscence of the ephemeral appears not just in the choice of motifs, but in her process of making the works: with mask tape she forms the outlines of her scenes - to then let time do its part. When the tape stripes detach, the composition exfoliates from the canvas, she captures this decomposition with oil on another canvas. The result in an almost photorealistic picture, undeniably figurative, while at the same time abstract. 



David Kroell's subtle sculptural works force the viewer to sharp his sense of vision: Almost invisible, they seem to literally "hide" themselves. Kroell manipulates architectonical details in the exhibition space. He forms rooms like other sculptors clay blocks, but in a silent and discreet way: walls peel off as if by an invisible hand, least details occur out of place, or traces seem left - of things never actually been there. The beauty lies in detail and needs the attentive viewer to recognize it. With its unobtrusively quality, Kroell's art can be seen as a counter comment on the current art discourse. 



A distant and poetic aura marks the works of both artists. The work of Päivi Takala and David Kroell is united by the unfinished idea, the indication of presence - and absence - at the same time. The artists set traces which send the viewer on the search.
