Source http://humabirgul.blogspot.comHüma Birgül’s paintings evoke in the viewer the most dynamic elements of life, such as explosion, spill, leak, and discharge, each of which resembles an individual phase of a cosmogonic story. The artist employs a competent technique emphasizing the randomness of “formation”. Here, randomness appears as a phenomenon of life, rather than a tool used for exploring the subconscious. After all, the conscience should minimally intervene for several reasons. The behavior of the artist may perhaps be described through the approach of Croce, who finds the artistic in the perception of the artist, rather than the artwork itself materially: “intuitive”. So, what is more important in the artwork than formal elements is the process that gives direction to and motivates the artwork. Technique is exercised to decrease the moment of intuition and exclusion process simultaneously in Hüma Birgül’s paintings; the artist includes as little material as possible in her “intuition” with a desire to avoid compromising such “intuition”. No contact of a brush or hand can be observed on the painting surface, but an image constructed through flowing the paint over the canvas. Speed, dynamism, randomness and formation are the essentials of these paintings.
These paintings, which can somehow be described as “abstract”, display layers generated through consecutive staining creating a strong perception of space to add the tension of figurative versus abstract in the artwork. The layers pushing and pulling each other to form a space within the effect of “simultaneousness” through their interrelations, while being an abstract stain individually reflect the dualism explained by Bergson based on the power of living against the resistance shown by the material world to such power.
Despite the layers constituting a space, the time as depicted in the paintings, again, reminds the intuitive “period” of Bergson, rather than “mathematical time”. The reason for this is a feeling, which may perhaps be explained through the psychological tides or synaesthesia experienced by the viewer due to frequent and intense use of colors and tones. The viewer, whether intentionally or not, attributes meanings to the forms and colors constituting the space through personal stories, which is the exact objective of the artist: Everyone should approach the paintings through his/her own story.
